Details: This striking portrait of an unknown lady is typical of Beach’s style, particularly in the treatment of the hair and the dress.
He is known for his strong likenesses, and this portrait is certainly that.
It’s provenance is not known.
Beach was born in Milton Abbas, Dorset. He studied at St. Martin’s Lane Academy and with Reynolds; he was said to be the latter’s favourite pupil.
In 1777 he moved from London to Bath, and it was his success there that drove him to make it a permanent move.
He is noted for strong likenesses, and Walpole wrote “His portraits never require the horrid question of -
He used high ‘fresh air’ colouring to the flesh, and often allowed the grain of the canvas to show through the paint, giving greater depth.
Beach is represented in many galleries both here and abroad including the Getty Museum Malibu and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This portrait is a typical example, especially the treatment of hair and the fine quality of dress.
