Frame: It is in fine condition and is probably in its original frame.
Details: A major early 19th century artist, specialising in the nude, to the slight disapproval of Victorian Society.
He was born in York, the son of a baker and mill owner.
Initially he studied under Robert Pech in Hull, but moved to the RA School in 1807 where he studied under Sir Thomas Lawrence.
Subsequently he was a major exhibitor with 138 works at the Royal Academy, 77 at the British Institute of Artists and 17 at the Royal Society of Artists.
He was elected ARA in1824 and RA in 1828.
His initial interests were in portraiture, but moved to the nude by the 1820s where he became one of the greatest exponents of the genre.
This charming portrait in oil on board is from his early period where clearly he was influenced by Lawrence.
It was painted circa 1815.
It has been authenticated by Messrs Christies, though its subject and provenance are unknown.
It is in a fine carved frame -
